President’s Charity Match in aid the of Chest, Heart and Stroke

Saturday 14 July at Portstewart Bowling Club was another great day for North West bowlers and in particular for the Northern Ireland Provincial Bowling Association, Veterans Section with over 80 Veteran Bowlers attending and taking part in the President’s Match.

This year for the first time there were Rinks taking part from Magherafelt, Ballycastle and Dungiven Clubs

The day’s events commenced at 2pm with Joe Austin, Coleraine presenting the Veterans Section with a new Cup to be played for annually in the President’s Charity Match. The Charity this year being Chest, Heart and Stoke.

President Noel Linton in his welcoming speech said he was very pleased to see so many players supporting the Match and hoped that everyone would enjoy themselves. There was a special welcome for Dave Evans, President of the Northern Ireland Bowling Association who was present and playing with a rink from his own Club, Magherafelt.

President Noel also thanked the Ladies of Portstewart Bowling Club for providing teas and snacks during the afternoon. He said this was greatly appreciated

The Match took place on 10 Rinks between a North Zone Team and a South Zone Team. The North Zone team consisted of veteran bowlers from Coleraine, Brookgreen, Portstewart, Portrush, Ballycastle and Dunluce Clubs and the South Zone team was made up of players from City of Derry, Limavady, Brook Park, Castlerock, Kilrea, Portglenone, Magherafelt and Dungiven Clubs.

The final result in a very exciting but friendly game saw the North Zone team victorious and winning by four shots.

The game was followed by a very welcome cup of tea in the Clubhouse and the presentation of the Cup to the winning Team Captain, Neville Lamont, Coleraine. It was also announced that the total amount raised for the Chest, Heart and Stroke charity was £520 and a cheque for this amount was handed over to Lorna Wilmot of the Causeway Support Group

Vice President Jim McIlroy thanked President Noel and Portstewart Club for providing an excellent day.

The NIPBA Veterans Section wish to acknowledge and thank Tesco’s Supermarket, Portstewart for the generous donation of a voucher which was used to defray the catering costs for the day.
