Pride of Mann 11 - sailing for the disabled

SAILING for the Disabled paid an impromptu visit to Ballycastle last week and brought with them the opportunity for budding sailors to experience the trip of a life time in this luxurious vessel named the Pride of Mann II.

Contact was made with the Ballycastle Marina Harbour Master via a local family and the vessel was filled to capacity on a trip to Rathlin Island.

This contact has been firmly established in Moyle District Council and hopefully the event will become an Annual event giving local people with disabilities the opportunity to experience sailing in a yacht with crew that are fully trained.

The Pride of Mann II is based in the Isle of Man in Douglas inner harbour. The Yacht was selected for Disability Sailing use and can seat up to 10 people.

She is equipped to RYA standards, with all the latest electronic navigation aids and has the RYA Sailability Foundation Certificate showing that she meets the full requirements to take people with disabilities sailing.

A hoist and sling on board allows easy transfer from shore to boat and down to cabin for sailors who are wheelchair users.

The mission statement of Sailing for the Disabled is:

“To provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in sailing on equal terms with their able bodies friends in a harmonious and safe environment.”
