Priorians prove too strong for Carrick Ladies

While probably not deserving of the final 5-2 scoreline, Carrick Ladies 1st XI proved no match for visiting Priorians on Saturday afternoon either in terms of fitness or application.

Priorians took the lead after 10 minutes with what was really a scrappy goal but still very much in line with the run of play.

Carrick fought back with a Christine Waide equaliser only to go behind again with an even softer goal where their defence appeared to stop playing, anticipating an infringement had been committed against them in their own goal area. The goal stood and the hosts went into half time 2-1 down.

The home side equalised again early in the second half from a well-taken Natasha McWilliams goal but once again failed to defend their comeback when Priorians went back into the lead at 3-2.

The visitors continued to press forward at every opportunity and two late goals left Carrick with an impossible mountain to climb.

“There’s no doubting this was a bad defeat,” said Carrick spokesperson Peter Stevenson after the match, “and we’re particularly disappointed at the way we fell away so much in the second half especially after we’d just got back on level terms for the second time in the match.

“Priorians worked much harder than us in the first half and we thought their performance might fall away in the second, especially when we fought back to 2-2.”

“We should have taken advantage of our second-half comeback but they actually upped the tempo and we had nothing left to counter them.

“That’s worrying, and we clearly need to look closely ... on eliminating unnecessary errors right across the pitch which also cost us dearly.”

Carrick Ladies are away to winless Derg Valley this weekend.

Elsewhere in Senior Two, Greenisland Ladies picked up their first point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Limavady Ladies.

The Greenisland girls will be aiming to build on Saturday’s share of the spoils when they host third-placed Omagh Ladies. It won’t be easy, however. The Tyrone outfit have won three from three.

Other Senior 2 results: NICS Ladies 1-3 Mossley Ladies; Owls Ladies 2-0 Derg Valley Ladies.
