Promising athletes end season on high

BALLYMENA & Antrim Athletics Club’s young athletes ended the season impressively at the last of the Edwards & Co meets at the Mary Peters Track last week.

Fourteen athletes represented the Ballymena & Antrim Athletic Club and 7 medals were brought home, two 1st place, three 2nd place, and two 3rd place.

This was a great achievement amidst a very comprehensive field of athletes from across the province and some from the South of Ireland.

One of the very young athletes taking part for the first time in competition was Erin McMahon who ran an amazing 150 metre race to finish 5th out of a field of 22 in a time of 24.91seconds.

Ellie McBurney at only 9 years old finished 7th in the 150m in a time of 25.11sec and a very credible 8th in 600m.

Rachel Brown another of the under 11 athletes ran an excellently paced 600m race to finish 3rd and add another medal to her growing collection.

In the Under 13s Caleb Dempsey brought home 3rd in the 800m and 5th place in the 200m. Martin McQuillan and Scott Doherty also put in fine performances in 200m finishing 7th and 8th respectively, while Martin also ran well to finish 11th in the 800m.

Suzannah Brown finished 5th in the 800m at under 15 age group in an extremely strong field and was consistent finishing 5th again in the long jump.

Under 17girls saw Ayeisha McFerran win the javelin with a throw of 28m and Roisin O’Kane matched this performance to win the Discus with distance of 24.56m.

The under 17 boys were also consistent with three of them taking 2nd place – Josh McElroy in the 200m, Stuart Gault in 800m and Stuart Martin in the Discus. Ben McKeown ran a comprehensive 800m to finish 7th in a time of 2.14.35.

The only senior to take part on the night was Samuel Millar who ran the 800m in a time of 2.06.36 .

Well done to all the young athletes who took part and who are all names to watch out for in the future.
