Promising performance from Dalriada U14 Hockey Team

Dalriada U14s played away to Omagh Academy in their first match of the season.

With a squad of 14 players Dalriada were motivated to perform well in the away fixture.

The game started off frantically with both sides attacking and defending strongly. Dalriada had a fantastic effort from Centre Forward Sara Jamison brilliantly saved by the Omagh goalie at the post and both wings Megan McBurney and Hannah Ritchie were producing determined runs to create the chances.

In defence Goalkeeper Laura Gibson was directing the Sweeper Caitlin McCormick, Left Back Jessica Johnston,Centre Back Anna Allen and Right Back Hannah Christie in a well organised manner. However, it was Omagh who were awarded the first penalty corner towards the end of the first half after, pressurising the Dalriada’s defence by quick passing into the circle.

Tara McConaghy as first runner sprinted out to block the shot and as a result of a superb tackle the ball deflected off the attacker’s stick and slit open the Omagh’s striker’s right eyebrow! After a review of the first half and some encouragement from Mrs. Ruddock the second half showed a superb determination from Dalriada.

Midfielders Kate Jamison, Tara McConaghy and Sophie Rollins worked tirelessly in defence as well as attack. Lucy Patterson, Rachel Wilson and Susan Gilmour played well coming on fresh in the second half.

Overall Dalriada deserved to win and looked the fitter team but they will have to learn to put the ball in the net in order to finish with a victory. A very pleasing start to the season. Well done to all the squad!
