Quigg hoping for big City support

DERRY City Reserves manager John Quigg believes the future is bright for the Brandywell men.

The former Institute man, whose side face Cockhill Celtic in the final of the Donegal News Ulster Senior League Cup, which takes place on Sunday, at Leckview Park, (KO 5pm), knows that Stephen Kenny's first team squad has back-up.

"In my opinion the future is very bright for Derry City, because the talent not just in my Reserve squad but in the Under 21 squad and other under age sides is unbelievable," he explained.

"This season alone the likes of James McClean, David McDaid, Shane McEleney, Seamus Sharkey and Adam Clarke have all played their part in the first team and that's great, but I know in the next few years if the young players keep working hard then the talent is certainly there.

"Hopefully the likes of Sean McCarron, Ryan McBride and Robbie Hume can push on this year and try to push themselves on into Stephen's (Kenny) plans for next season.

"Also this season we have four players out on loan at both Lisburn Distillery and Institute, so our system is certainly working.

"I know that in the next few weeks and for next season, Stephen (Kenny) will be using more and more of the young players. He has been at every game this season watching us and he too has been surprised a little at how good some of the young players have developed over the last few weeks."

As for the final this Sunday, Quigg is expecting an entertaining encounter and is hoping a large City support will travel to Letterkenny.

"The league doesn't lie, we are second and Cockhill are first, so I feel it's going to be one hell of a game. With the first team having a few injuries and suspensions I'll be missing a few players, but I have confidence in the players we bring in.

"These players have all played together over the last few years, they have done well in the Foyle Cup and they are a great bunch of lads.

"Donal O'Brien has done a terrific job at Cockhill and one thing that I do know is that he always gets his teams to try and play the game the right way.

"If anyone has seen us play this year and then you know that we too like to keep the ball on the deck, so because of that I'm expecting a good game of football, which will hopefully be played in front of a big Derry support," concluded Quigg.
