Quinn keen on Sammy

FORMER Glenavon starlet Sammy Stewart could be set to rejoin the club.

The 19-year-old has been training with Marty Quinn’s men having been released by Aberdeen back in January.

The Mourneview Park boss is very keen to bring the midfielder on board but says that a player may have to leave first if that is to happen.

“Sammy’s been doing a bit of training with us and I like the look of him,” he told the ‘MAIL.’

“I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Sammy in training and I like his attitude. He’s an attacking type of player and I would hope that he’ll be coming in if we can get something sorted out. Possibly this week but it’s all about budgets and finances.

“To enable me to bring Sammy in, there might have to be players going out and doing that isn’t very easy. It’s going to be hard and we’ll not get too carried away at the moment because it’s all up in the air.”

Stewart joined Aberdeen in the summer of 2008 for a reported fee of 15,000 and was tipped for big things by then boss Jimmy Calderwood. The youngster went on to feature on the bench for the first team on several occasions that season and finally made it onto the pitch in the final game of the term, a 2-1 victory over Hibs that sealed a UEFA Cup place for the club.

However that was also to be Calderwood’s final game in charge as Mark McGhee came in from Motherwell. Stewart’s first team opportunities failed to increase and he was released on January 5 of this year.

Blues fans will remember Stewart most for his screamer in a 3-3 draw with Cliftonville at Solitude but will also recall his lively midfield performances during his run in the team. If Stewart could rediscover that form, he could turn out to be a fantastic signing for Marty Quinn.

However who will move out to facilitate the move? Shea Campbell has already been released whilst Adrian Harper is on the transfer list but his chances of a move look to have decreased with the League of Ireland transfer window slamming shut at the end of July. The club’s other back-up central midfielder Barry Johnston’s contract is set to expire in January.
