Quinn praises boss Gerard

AFTER handing Reserve players Joe Finlay and Ryan Murphy their Carling Premiership debuts on Saturday, Glenavon boss Marty Quinn has praised his Reserve manager Gerard McMahon for the work he has done so far this season.

The former Tottenham and Northern Ireland midfielder has, in his first season in charge of the side, led them to second place in the league table and Quinn is confident that more players from the promising young side will make the step up to the first team in the near future.

“The reserves are absolutely flying at the minute and Gerard’s doing a great job,” he said.

“The young lads are responding to his professionalism so it’s not all doom and gloom at the club.

“My hand was forced on Saturday when I had to bring Ryan Murphy, Brendan Shannon and Joe Finlay in. I would have had Ciaran Doherty in as well but he picked up an ankle injury on Thursday night playing for the Reserves.

“Joe took his goal like a top man and Ryan Murphy was busy when he came on too so we’ll see how they go in the remaining matches. We’ll give them a sniff here and there and see how they get on. They’ve been playing very well in the Reserves and they’re well recommended by Gerard.

“It all depends on what way we’re fixed though. We have games to win and I can’t take too many chances at the minute or we could end up in a nasty place and I don’t want to be there.”

Reserves gaffer Gerard McMahon was also pleased with the involvement of his duo and is hopeful that the youngsters can make it in the first team.

“It was a good experience for the guys,” he said.

“I thought both Joe and Ryan did well when they came on. Ryan was chuffed to bits and I think Joe would score goals at any level which he showed on Saturday. Maybe Marty will give them a wee run out between now and the end of the season.”
