Quinn slates Plummer

GLENAVON boss Marty Quinn has slated goalkeeper Andrew Plummer's performance in the 5-4 friendly defeat to Killyleagh, calling the number one's display 'abysmal.'

Plummer was at fault for four of the five goals conceded by the Blues and Quinn was livid with the goalkeeper’s performance.

“We had an abysmal goalkeeping performance from Andrew Plummer. It was disgracefully poor,” he told the MAIL.

“He wasn’t up to it, didn’t feel like it, didn’t want it, didn’t show us or the shirt the respect we deserve. He knows he was wrong and he duly apologised to the players on Saturday and it’s been forgotten about now.

“There were a few quiet words on Thursday night but believe me it was quiet and it was nothing too major. He knows and I know that he’s better than he showed on the night. Hopefully we’ve seen the last of that type of performance from Andrew.”

At the other end of the pitch, summer signing Mark Miskimmin opened his Glenavon account and Quinn is delighted with the early progress of his new recruit.

“Mark led the line extremely well and I think he linked up well with Tony on Saturday against Wolves too,” he said.

“He was a step above everyone at Killyleagh and did very well. He is a player that will score goals for us, I’m sure of that and he’ll certainly get us a lot of free-kicks around the box. He’s good at that and he will make himself a bit of a nuisance up there.”

Glenavon certainly made it difficult for themselves at Killyleagh on Thursday night and, largely thanks to the goalkeeping display, went in 4-2 down at the break.

They had gone behind as early as the fourth minute when Plummer was beaten by a 35-yard lob but Conor Walsh got the first of his brace five minutes later, heading in Miskimmin’s cross at the back post.

Plummer was again the villain soon after when, after Jay Magee’s clearance rebounded off the home side’s attacker, he strangely turned to face his goal with the ball at his feet and, under pressure from the striker, seemed to tap it into his own goal.

The hard-working Miskimmin could have drawn Glenavon level but the keeper made two good close range saves.

On 25 minutes, Killyleagh made it 3-1 with a back post header with Plummer rooted to his spot. It was then 4-1 as the goalkeeper was beaten at his near post by a 30 yard effort.

Conor Walsh then hit the bar with a great effort but time was left for Miskimmin to bag his first goal for the club, tapping home the rebound after James Costello’s shot was blocked.

Soon after the restart, Conor Walsh smashed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 4-3 but Killyleagh soon regained their two goal advantage with a penalty kick after Aaron Marks stopped an effort with his arm.

A Killyleagh defender then scored an own goal to round up the scoring at 5-4 as Michael McKee fired wide and the keeper saved well from Miskimmin’s free-kick as the game drew to a close.

Not your usual boring pre-season friendly then, but a day that Andrew Plummer will be hoping to forget sooner rather than later.
