QUINN STAYS

MARTY Quinn WILL be remaining as Glenavon boss.

The experienced gaffer had questioned his own performance after the defeat to Glentoran meant his side had lost six of their last seven league games.

After spending the remainder of the weekend in thought, the manager has decided that his future is at Mourneview Park and that he will be staying in his position.

“I’m staying, for sure,” he told the ‘MAIL.’

“The chairman has called to see me and the board have been very supportive. I appreciate that very much and I think they know where I want to be and they think that I’m the man to do that.

“A lot of players have been in touch as well and I’ve been quite humbled by some of the comments I’ve had from people. I’m back up and running again and as keen as ever to get it right.

“Obviously I was down on Saturday. It’s not rocket science that our performances of late haven’t been good enough and the buck stops with the manager.

“What I said was the way I felt at the time but it was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction as well and having a press conference right after the game probably wasn’t the best of ideas because I didn’t have time to really consider things.”

The boss had told reporters that he was “doing a lot of soul searching over the weekend as to whether (he could) continue as manager.”

He went on: “I am responsible for the team that went onto the park today and responsible for the result and responsible for the indiscipline. It’s not good enough and I’m in a bad place at the moment. It’s not good enough for Glenavon FC and they certainly deserve better than that embarrassment we had out there today.

“The club are trying to move forward and the directors are working hard to bring us all forward. It’s not happening where it matters most; out on the pitch. I’ve never been in this position before, it’s new to me and I have to consider what I think is best for Glenavon FC.”

The Glenavon board, however, had immediately responded to Quinn’s interview with a statement declaring that they are “fully in support of Marty Quinn and there will be no change of management at Mourneview Park.” They also said that “Marty has some issues to deal with and he is being given every encouragement and backing at board level to sort these out. He is a highly respected, experienced and successful Irish League manager who will get it right. Now is the time for everyone in the Glenavon family to rally behind him.”

And indeed supporters were rallying behind the boss on internet forums with one fan pleading, “Please stay Marty. Give it time, you are the man for the job!” whilst another declared that Quinn “has to stay. We would be really stupid to let a man of his calibre go. When was the last time we had such a good manager? I think we'd have to go back a brave while.”
