Rachel makes a splash as she becomes double British champ

Local swimmer Rachel Bethel (13) had an extremely busy and successful summer in the pool.

She became the double British Age Group Swimming Champion in both the 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle events at the British Swimming Championships held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Rachel, a Lisburn City Swimming Club swimmer, was also silver medallist in the 400m freestyle clocking a Commonwealth Games consideration time of 4.22.26.

During the summer, Rachel also represented Ireland at the European Youth Olympic Festival held in Utrecht, Holland.

With 49 countries competing, Rachel finished fifth in the 200m freestyle and was the top finishing swimmer born in the year 2000 in this event.

She said, “I was delighted with my performances during the summer and having the opportunity to take part in the European Youth Olympics was an incredible experience.

“I’d like to thank everyone in the Club, Sport Lisburn and Mary Peters Trust for supporting me last season and I am really looking forward to what this season brings.”

Lisburn City Swimming Club now has six swimmers represented on Irish National Squads with many more swimmers achieving Ulster Squad qualification times. Well done to all swimmers involved in the Club.
