Railway knocked out of the running for First Division title

RESULTS from week 15 of the First Division were intentionally held back from publication, until the league fixtures resumed after several weeks off due to individuals and doubles competitions which were held in February.

Railway 3 Anglers 5 - With the Railway four points adrift of the leaders, this match could have been billed as a proverbial ‘four pointer’ deciding whether the Railway came within two points of second place or fall six points behind, and well and truly knocked out of the running.

Wins from Danny Murphy and Damian Paxton gave the home side great hope of snatching victory, but M McGrath and N Tumilty replied to tighten the match up.

The ever reliable BJ McAnarney and Cathal McAnarney both won to guarantee the Anglers at least a point.

The Railway’s heads could have dropped knowing they were realistically out of the running for the league but Gary Doherty and Damian Paxton pulled one frame back to leave a tense finish.

But Captain BJ McAnarney and N Tumilty battled hard and secured victory, showing just how much winning the league would mean to the side from the Corbet.

Mulholland’s B 5 Bus Bar 3: ‘Swings and roundabouts’ is the only way to describe how this match started off.

The Dromore side went 1-0 up through P Winter before A McCartan equalised.

S Wilson then restored the Dromore teams lead before ‘the Grouse’ Mulligan showed his efficiency as Captain to pull the scores level again.

M Jardine restored the home side’s lead for a third time, and the bus bar would not recover from it.

M McCormack insured a draw before A Curry and S Holland finished the match off with a frame in lieu.

Market B 5 O’Reillys 3: The Market could have been excused for being complacent after their cup heroics the previous night but they still had a realistic chance of finishing in the prizes in the league.

Singles victories for P McStraw G Graham M McCormick and D Russell were just some of the highlights in an impressive run of five wins from six frames.

G Graham and P Beggs rounded the match off with a hard fought victory over O’Reillys captain Ruby and his mate Marty Shepherd.

Bridge B 1 First & Last 7: The art form of it 8-ball pool is simplicity in itself and this was the bridge bar’s downfall.

Too many exhibition style shots and hesitation over easy pots cost the Bridge their worst defeat of the season.

Taepot, C Parrott, B McCourt and B Lyness made it look effortless to guarantee the F&L a result with only half the match gone.

The F&L captain, B Burns, must have been short of players because he usually does not play himself in the singles but he duly capitalised on his opportunity after Mark Rice failed to judge the speed of the cue-ball. Burns happily cleared up the remaining balls.

In other news Bert Doherty ended his blistering run off form, leaving the home side 6-0 down. Bert was so disgusted at his performance he left the country in the following weeks.

Imperial 7 Gilford 1: Gilford captain Brian Campbell was the only glimmer of hope for the away side in a humiliating defeat to another team in the bottom half.

The Imperial did not let their disappointment of a quarter final cup defeat to Higgins in the previous week hinder their hopes for a top half finish in the league.

Ivan McCreanor, M Jameson, A Corbett, R Kerr and R Malcolmson insured the match was done and dusted before the doubles took place.
