Rainey in All Ireland action

CATHERINE Walshe, Lisa Walls and Robyn Hastings, reigning squash champions of the Ulster Schools cup since U13 level, travelled to Dublin on 30th March to compete in the Irish Schools Championships. All three girls have represented Ulster on numerous occasions and have competed in various tournaments all over Ireland competing with the best juniors in Ireland.

The three girls played a school representing Leinster in the final; Gaelcholaiste Cheathelael, Carlow.

First on court was Lisa Walls, who unfortunately was under the weather due to illness. Despite feeling poorly, best efforts were visible and a strong match was held against Niamh Ni Mhurdia. Some great shots were played, however, Niamh progressed to win the match 3-0.

Next on court was Catherine Walshe who was set to face Elaine Nic an Mhaoir, ranked no.1 in Ireland. Catherine played some amazing rallies, pushing the Irish no.1 in all three games, however, unfortunately could not find the necessary shots to win the match.

Last to step on court was Robyn Hastings. Competing against the Irish no.4, it was evident that the match was going to be tough, however, Robyn stepped up to the mark and fought a valiantly. Robyn played some super shots, breaking down Niamh Ni Chaoimh’s play. Although, despite best efforts, Robyn narrowly lost the match.

Let’s hope that the commitment that these three girls have shown to Ulster Squash will inspire fellow Rainey Endowed students to sustain the schools standard at both Ulster and Irish level.
