Rainey scoop sixty medals!

Thursday saw the February start of the athletics season for the Rainey Endowed athletes with the County Londonderry-North Antrim Final Sports Hall Athletics competition held in Meadowbank Sport Arena between the areas secondary schools.

The boys and girls U13 and U15 athletics teams from the Rainey Endowed had a great day, winning a total of 60 medals.

In the U13 Girls event the Rainey girls showed great athletic potential with Charlotte McKinlay placed 1st in the High Jump and Katherine Glendinng 3rd. Charlotte McKinlay was also 2nd in the Long Jump and 1st in the 2 lap race with Katherine Glendinning 3rd in the 4 lap race.

Erin Henry, Form 1, made an excellent start to her Rainey athletics achieving both a 1st in the Triple Jump and Shot Putt. Betty Scott also Form 1, won the 6 Lap race with an excellent run. Other field events saw Ellen Campbell 3rd in the Long Jump and Lauren Mulholland 2nd in the Shot Putt.

The competition finished with the relays and the Rainey U13 girls were delighted to win 3 out of the 4 relays, coming second in one.

4x2 person relay, Rainey 1st, Lauren Mulholland and Betty Scott.

4x2 Lap relay Rainey 1st, 4x1 Lap relay Rainey 2nd, Charlotte McKinlay, Kathryn Glendinning, Kristin McClure, and Hannah M Porter.

4x2 Obstacle relay Rainey 1st, Hannah M Porter, Lauren Mulholland, Ellen Campbell, and Kathryn Glendinning.

The U13 Boys competition also saw some fine performances from the Rainey team. Jonathan Carson collected two individual silver in the triple jump and 6 lap race. Other individual medal winners were Pierce McLarnon with bronze in the 4 lap race, Kaelum Irvine with silver in the speed bounce, Thomas Boyle with bronze in the 6 lap race.

Form 1 pupils in their first athletics competition also won bronze, Bryan Hall coming 3rd in the long jump and David Dripps coming 3rd in the vertical jump.

In the relays the U13 boys won 3 medals, with gold in the obstacle relay, Kaelum Irvine, Pierce McLarnon, Bryan Hall and Jonathan Carson won silver in the 4x1 lap relay and Jonathan Carson and Michael McIvor-New won silver in the 2x4 lap relay. This gave Jonathan an impressive 4 medals in total.

The Rainey U15 Girls Team also had a successful day. In the field events Rachel Burns was 1st in the Speed Bounce and Cara Brown was 2nd in the Vertical Jump. In the races Charlotte Bain was 1st in the 4 Lap Race and 3rd in the 2 Lap Race. Rachel Burns was also 3rd in the 4 Lap Race.

The Rainey girls also won both the relay races.

4 x 2 Lap relay Rainey 1st, Rachel Burns, Cara Brown, Thea Corry, and Zoe Crooks.

The Rainey U15 Boys Team also enjoyed a successful day. Joshua Evans led the way with two gold medals in the long jump and triple jump. James McGurk also impressively won two medals, with a gold in the shot and a bronze in the triple jump. James Cunningham won a silver in the triple jump and Joshua Henry won a bronze in the 2 lap race. The U15 boys relay teams also won two bronze medals. Jonathan Hanna and Jamie McCrum came second in the 2x4 lap relay and Richard Winder, Jonathan Hanna, Joshua Evans and James McGurk came second in the 4x2 lap relay.

Congratulations to the following pupils have been selected for County trials to select teams for the Ulster Finals.

U13 Girls - Charlotte McKinley, Ellen Campbell, Erin Henry, Kathryn Glendinning, Lauren Mulholland, Bethany Scott.

U13 Boys - Jonathan Carson, Matthew McGurk, Bryan Hall, Thomas Boyle.

U15 Girls - Cara Brown, Emma Marshall, Charlotte Bain, Rachel Burns, Thea Corry, Amy Parke.

U15 Boys - James Cunningham, Josh Evans, James McGurk, Jamie McCrum.

A great day was enjoyed by all and the Rainey PE department thank Barrie and Barbara Holmes of the Mid-Ulster Athletic Club for all their amazing work in organising and running this annual event.
