Rampaging South Firsts hit double figures in home rout

South Antrim 10 Cliftonville 1

South Antrim’s Firsts got back to winning ways at their new home on Prospect Hill in a rout last weekend against Cliftonville.

South started the game in possession and immediately set about applying pressure to Cliftonville. They were soon one-up thanks to an easy tap in from Paul Maguire, similar to chances he had been missing this season.

The second goal was the epitome of sexy hockey. Skipper Lee Marshall and Matthew Getty combined, in telepathic fashion, to rip through the Cliftonville defence, resulting in the former finishing off the move with aplomb. The third came from a lovely set piece involving Adam Glass and Ward Phillips, well finished by the latter. Mark Conn added a fourth after a fine cross from Marshall Snr. Half time and South were 4 goals to the good, playing exquisite attacking hockey with no threat coming from the East Belfast side. It wasn’t long before South extended their lead through a fine drag flick from schoolboy, Patric Cochane. Matthew Getty doubled his tally for the season soon after with a timid effort on the spin which trickled under the despairing keeper. After some difficult matches recently, it seemed that finally the tide was turning in South’s favour. The 7th was an own goal after yet another dangerous ball from the skipper. Goal of the match was undoubtedly scored by Adam Marshall, who poked in an already goal-bound shot from less than a yard, to deny Mark Conn his 2nd of the game. Further goals were added by Paul Maguire (from a deflection), Adam Glass (penalty flick).

South will look to build confidence from this result going into the festive period. Next up for the Lisburn outfit is a trip to face Queen’s University this Saturday. Thanks to our Sponsors of the Month, McMinn School of Motoring.
