Randalstown men should be crowned champions this week

AFTER no fewer than 26 rounds of league matches, the INBEV Town and Country pool league finally draws to a close this week, where, barring a freak set of results, Randalstown Veterans will be crowned league champions.

With the Randalstown team not in action last week, their rearranged match with Lurig A on Tuesday night could be the game that will see them crowned champions before the last round of matches on Thursday night if they can take four points from that game, otherwise victory should be sealed on Thursday night at their home game with Halfway House B.

In one of the most competitive leagues in years, the Veterans in recent weeks have hit a purple patch in the last rounds of matches picking up a staggering 30 points from seven games included in this was the 4-1 victory over defending champions Glencloy Inn which all but secured the Veterans grip on the title was a little tighter.

The attention to the chasing teams will be realistically ensuring a runners up position with any one of three teams still capable of getting second.

Glencloy Inn hold the advantage on 86 points with McAuleys a further point back on 85 and finally Lurig A on 83 with a game in hand over the other two teams.

With only a handful of games played last week Glencloy had an easy 4-1 away win in Heffron’s with Brian Taggart ensuring Heffron’s were not whitewashed in their final game of the season. Heffron’s also had another reason to cheer as their captain Mickey Joe O’Boyle picked up the Sportperson of the year award.

Elsewhere, BUSC had a narrow 3-2 win over Halfway B where wins for Jimmy Knowles , Seamus Clarke and Seamus Scullion ensured victory for the Ballymena team. Two points for Halfway B however now sees them tied on points with their stable mates Halfway A, who went down 4-1 to Greenhills wins for Michael McAuley, Ciaran Reid, Joe Larkin and Paul Scullion guarantee that a
