Rangers hoping to complete a league and cup double

BANBRIDGE Rangers will be looking to add another title to their trophy cabinet on Friday evening when they attempt to defend the Alan Wilson Cup against Ballymacash Rangers.

The final will be played at Crystal Park in Banbridge which is a superb opportunity for locals to turn out in support of Dan Thornton’s men.

This week could also see Banbridge Rangers lift the Intermediate B title if they can beat Broomhedge this Tuesday evening at Anvil Park near the Maze.

Ballymacash Rangers are no strangers to the Banbridge side who have already faced them twice this season and three times last year.

The Lisburn side has been rejuvenated under the management of Jason Lowry and has saw them stay in the top three in the league all season and push for one of the promotion places. After several comfortable wins last season Banbridge Rangers have found their counterparts much tougher opponents at home and away but still came away with 2-0 wins on both occasions.

In the semi-finals Banbridge Rangers knocked out derby rivals Moneyslane at a packed Cheney Park in early March whereas Ballymacash had to force extra time against league challengers Broomhill before being able to book their place in the showpiece final.

Twelve months ago Banbridge Rangers celebrated their first Cup win bringing the Alan Wilson Cup back to Banbridge after an extra time win over Camlough Rovers.

A large crowd at Holm Park that night were treated to a pulsating game of football seeing Colin Cousins send the game to extra time after cancelling out a second half Camlough opening goal.

In extra time prolific Rangers striker Gareth Fulton made himself a hero curling a shot into the top corner to give Banbridge Rangers the win and the same player will be out to repeat his heroics if possible after showing a ruthless streak in front of goal in recent weeks.

Hopefully the players can do the business on Friday night in their hometown and lift the cup for a second time in succession. Kick Off at Crystal Park is at 6.30pm.
