Rangers in Irish Cup action

BANBRIDGE Rangers will take on top Amateur side Killyleagh YC this Saturday in the JJB Irish Cup First Round.

Killyleagh will be a tough match for any team in the country and especially in the Irish Cup which has given the County Down team their reputation for success.

In a milestone 50th year Killyleagh Youth Club will be looking to put another Irish Cup run together and have done so in the past on numerous occasions, even reaching the semi finals in 2003 when the eventually lost to Linfield.

In the five years previous to this result Killyleagh reached the sixth round or quarter finals in every season, most notably losing only 1-0 to Linfield at Windsor Park in 2000 before taking Glenavon to a replay a year later after a credible 1-1 against the Lurgan outfit.

Banbridge Rangers had a tough outing at Rathfriland Rangers last Saturday and will be without more influential players when they travel to a club who have fostered three full Internationals including Northern Ireland’s top goal scorer David Healy.

Geordie McCallister will be looking for a positive result and will hope the squad on Saturday will not be overawed by their opponents who have had a relatively slow start to this season in the Amateur Premier League only taking four out of a possible nine points so far.

Banbridge Rangers’ debut in the Irish Cup last season also ended at the hands of a side from the Amateur Premier League with Albert Foundry winning 4-0 at Cheney Park after a scoreless first half.
