Rathfriland U9s see off physical Killowen team

ON Saturday Rathfriland U9s played a physical Killowen team at the Games Development Centre in Newry.

Rathfriland created a few early chances and opened the scoring early in the first period after a great passing movement with Aaron Baxter and Alex McKee combining well in midfield and Shane Haughey coolly side footing the ball into the Killowen net.

Killowen then fought back and scored two goals of their own.

In the second period Rathfriland looked a different team. They had a real desire to win the game and started to put the Killowen team under pressure.

Shane Haughey went on one of his strong runs and danced past a couple of the Killowen defenders before hitting an unstoppable shot into the Killowen net to make it 2-2.

Rathfriland grew in confidence and it wasn’t long before they were on the score sheet again with Alex McKee nipping in at the back post to score after a long range shot from Reuben Toal.

Johnny McGivern and Christopher McConville were now looking unbeatable at the back for Rathfriland, as they started to dominate the play.

Adam Trimble was now getting really involved in the game and ran the length of the pitch to put in a great tackle to prevent Killowen from scoring.

At the other end he produced a great piece of skill and fired an unstoppable shot into the Killowen net. Rathfriland increased their advantage after a great passing movement involving Christopher McConville and Reuben Toal which ended in Aaron Baxter scoring Rathfriland’s 5th goal of the game.

In the third period Rathfriland’s defence was put under a lot of pressure but Jack Maginn was outstanding in goals as he pulled off a number of great saves. Birthday boy Johnny McGivern who was only playing his second game for the U9s showed his class as he put in a man of the match performance.

Rathfriland finished the game strongly as Alex McKee forced his way through the Killowen defence to get his second goal of the game.

Rathfriland showed great determination throughout the game to pull off a great result.
