Rathfriland Youth resume training for new season

THE youth section of Rathfriland Football Club are getting back into full swing after the summer break with training commencing at Iveagh Park on Wednesday August 1 from 7–8pm.

The youth section was formed in 2006 and has grown in that time with 130 players registered last year playing for teams from U8 to U16.

The ethos of RFC Youth is to provide an opportunity for all children, boys and girls aged between 5-18 to play and enjoy the game of football whether it’s at the training sessions or for a team.

In doing so they aim to promote the health and well being of the children involved, whilst also ensuring they have the opportunity to become the best they possibly can be, in a safe and friendly environment.

The club has 17 IFA qualified coaches who coach and manage nine teams. The younger teams play in the IFA Games Development Programme in Newry, U11, U12 and U13 teams in the Carnbane League in Newry and for the first time two teams, the U15s and U17s have applied to play in the Mid-Ulster Youth League.

Chairman Mark Bickerstaff says, “The youth section has given the whole club a great boost over the past three seasons with training nights a joy to behold with sometimes over 100 young people enjoying the beautiful game with no mention of Xboxs or PlayStations.”

Mark went on to point out that ‘the step into the Mid-Ulster League is a natural progression as the club strives to develop our young talent to play in the senior teams in the future.
