Rathmore through to next round of Ulster Fourball

THE Rathmore team travelled to Mayobridge for the return leg in the Ulster Fourball with a 5-0 advantage and 19 holes up on Sunday.

This scoreline would suggest some confidence but the tricky Mayobridge course proved to be challenging enough to reverse the score and all came down to ‘holes up’.

The McMullan pairing of ‘main man’ Johnny and Robert won 8 and 7 at home and kept their losing score away to 3 and 2.

Robbie Doherty and Davy Hewitt came back from four down to a 2 and 1 defeat.

Calculators came out when Mayobridge finished with a 5-0 win but they ended up only 13 holes up and Rathmore now progress to the next round. A few weeks should see the team Captain’s nails grow enough for another chewing then!

* SIX handicap Mark McClelland now holds the Town Cup by virtue of his 40 points over the Valley Links at Rathmore Golf Club on Sunday. Birdies were carded at 5, 10 and 17 and, with twenty points back, Mark kept his nose in front of David Wall (14) and Pat Elliott (14) with David keeping second spot to himself.

Numerous 39s were returned, Stephen Elliott (17), Paul Rohdich (4) Geoff Niblock (12), Harry Moon (16), Jim Chambers (13) Brian O’Connor (14) and Eoin Donnelly (6).
