Ballinderry bowler, Raymond Stubbs, was sitting on top of the world after a scintillating display in Manchester over the weekend earned him the World Short Mat Bowls Singles Championship.

Stubbs won the World Singles for the first time 16 years ago, but the latest success saw Raymond at his sublime best.

A modest Raymond believed this win was even better than back in 2000 and many would agree that competition is fiercer now than it ever was.

Back home in Lisburn, Raymond said: “It is hard to believe it was back in 2000 I last won the trophy and the win this time has given me much more delight even though the win in 2000 was my first ever.”

Stubbs won nine of the ten section games with the only blemish a defeat by Joel Hagar, Sweden. He took a place in the semi-finals with ease.

Raymond was not seriously troubled when beating Adam Sultana, England, 13-9 in the semi-final before going on to lift the highest prize of all with a convincing 16-5 final win over Sweden’s Dick Almen.

The latest success capped a great couple of weeks for Raymond who won the prestigious Belmont singles title and joined with Ballinderry team mates, Paul Reid and his brother Gordon Stubbs to reach the triples finals in the Irish Short Mat Championships to be played next month.
