Rebecca racks up a hat-trick of titles in Leinster

It follows on from her Mixed Doubles success in the Ulster Open a week previous - when she also reached all three finals.

This time around, she managed to see all three over the line, the Girls’ Doubles alongside her sisted Rachael.

Rachael also showed her quality in the singles, seeing off Alexandra Troy in the semi-finals to set up an All-Woods decider.

It was Troy who had beaten Rebecca in Ulster but Rachael couldn’t repeat that feat, losing out to her all-victorious sister.

Rebecca, seeded second, was taken to three sets by Orla Flynn of the Badminton Ireland Academy. She won the first with consummate ease and booked her place in the semi-final winning the decider 21-16 but the reward was another clash with Niamh Gannon, whom she saw off this time in straight sets 21-18 21-19.

Not unexpectedly, with both of the Woods sisters bidding to confirm not only their places on the Quadrangular team but also the Under 17 European Championships, there was no let-up in the challenge with Rachael taking the first 21-15 but Rebecca coming back strongly to control the second 21-10.

The third had spectators on the edge of their seats as Rebecca took the title in the narrowest of fashions; 24-22.

In the Girls Doubles, it was back to the winners podium for the Woods twins as they dominated the competition with a 21-8 21-12 opening round victory over Amy and Niamh Gannon and Katie Browne. Aisling O’Meara fared little better, put to the sword 21-15 21-12 in the semi-final.

In a decider lasting 20 minutes against Kerry Fallon and Orla Flynn, the Woods twins eased to victory 21-10 21-9.

Rebecca and Kyle Magee have been on top of their game in the mixed doubles not only at home but in Holland quite recently and added the Leinster title to their haul of awards this season.

They began by knocking out Ethan O’Connor and Alex Chan-Tayor 21-9 21-5. Kim Feehily and Alpha’s Jack Armstrong were next up for the all-conquoring Magee/Woods partnership who ran out 21-9 21-8 victors and neither Michael Staunton and Alexandra Troy nor Mark Kinnerk and Niamh Gannon were able to trouble the top seeds, who won both in straight sets.

Meanwhile, particular attention should be given to the performance of Alpha’s Jack Armstrong in reaching the semi-final of the Boys Singles. Seeded No 5/8 he was frugal in his opening match against Luke Davis, winning 21-4 21-10 and showed great grit and determination to overcome the highly rated Vincent Pontanosa 21-10 22-20 in just short of the half-hour mark.

He then claimed the scalp of No3/4 seed Eoghan O’Grady 21-16 21-18 and it is no disgrace to lose to Raphoe’s Kyle Magee, such is the standing of the Donegal talent.
