Record numbers for the Causeway Coast Marathon

RECORD numbers took part in 26extreme organised Causeway Coast Marathon on Saturday.

With distances including; 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon and Ultra Marathon (39miles) to choose from, there was something for everyone.

The Ultra Runners set off at 7.15 on Portstewart Strand as they began their 39 mile journey in wet and windy conditions.

The Marathon set off from Portbalintrae at 9.30am, Half Marathoners from Larrybone Head at 12.30pm, with the 10K runners at 2.30pm when they left Portmoon, all events finished in Portbalintrae.

Springwell had representatives in all the races. The heavy rain during the week and the blustery winds made conditions tough for all the runners.

Results: Ultra - Barry Murray 5:47:25, Aisling Coppinger 6:3:28. Well done to Springwell’s James McMullan 7:04:13and Alistair Shaw 8:17:38 completing their first outing over the Ultra distance.

Marathon - Lochlainn Connolly 3:47:32, Joanne Curran 4:18:51 Springwell Results: Chris Millar 4:14:33, Richard Crown 4:41:32, Catherine Butcher 5:16:28, Hugh Deighan 5:22:29, Peter Jack 5:23:17.

Half Marathon - Martin Rea 1:35:46, Karen Alexander 1:38:53. Springwell Chris Denton 1:37:30 finished fourth, Graeme Morrison 1:54:13 and Nicola Frizelle 2:07:45.

10K - Lochlainn Connolly 41:11 and Springwell’s Ciara Toner 49:09 recording her first victory in Springwell colours. David Jackson finished 5th in 44:34.

* Annadale Striders Paul Pollock 30:19 and North Belfast’s Gladys Ganiel O’Neill 36:49 were the major prize winners at the Bangor Aurora 10K Road Race on Saturday.

A record turnout of over 800 runners defied the blustery conditions among them Springwell’s Bryan Edgar and Johnny Wilson. Bryan ran seasons best 37:59 and Johnny preparing for the Dublin Marathon at the end of October ran 40:43.

A head wind on the run home mad conditions tough for the fourth running of the Portrush Parkrun. Springwell’s Jason McLeister was first man home in 20:00 with Gemma Turley getting back into running after having a baby in the summer first lady in 24:12.

Nicki McPeak and Janeen McGregor ran the BMW 39 Berlin Marathon on Sunday. Nicki completed the 26.2 miles in 3:22:48 and Janeen 3:58:15.
