Repeat of final for Academy

There will be a repeat of last year’s final in the second round of the Burney Cup.

Holders Banbridge Academy have been drawn away to Sullivan Upper, who they beat 3-1 to win the trophy for the fourth successive season last March thanks to a hat-trick from Rory Woods.

This year, the competition has a new, local sponsor as Sintons At The Bridge from Scarva are supporting the historic schoolboy’s competition, now in it’s 94th season.

Banbridge have won the newly renamed Sintons At The Bridge Burney Cup 13 times and been beaten in the final on a further 13 occasions. They have missed out on the final only once in the last 11 campaigns and they even won the double last season, also beating Sullivan in the McCullough Cup final.

Academy’s Master in charge of Hockey, Mark Cordner, who is also the Chairman of the Joint School’s Committee, said: “This year’s Sintons At The Bridge Burney Cup will be a fantastic competition as there are so many schools playing an excellent level of hockey in Ulster. I believe this year will be great for the competition.”

Round Two will take place on Saturday 8th February.
