Replay needed in Butler Shield semi

Bann Fifths 13

Inishowen Seconds 13

BANN Fifths had Inishowen as long-distance visitors for this Butler Shield semi-final played at Rifle Park last Saturday.

The rugby may not have been top quality but here was no lack of intensity or effort as both sides chased a place in the final of the competition.

The Donegal men scored an early try following a kick and chase and for much of the game they clung to their lead, reduced later to two points when Andrew Laverty slotted over a penalty for the home side.

When the rugged visitors grabbed a second try near the end it looked all over. But No 8 Andy Kennedy, in only his third game of the season, rescued the situation with a last-minute try under the posts, with Laverty’s conversion taking the game into extra time.

Laverty put his side ahead for the first time early in the second period but Inishowen battled back to win a penalty just inside Bann’s 22 with the successful kick again tieing the sides, a fair reflection of a cup-tie played out with all the fervour associated with a semi-final.

Bann flanker Alan Irvine was adjudged by both teams to have put in a man-of-the-match performance, with his tackling and all-action style repeatedly catching the eye. Bann were also well-served by the front row of props Andy Wilson and Adam Proctor and hooker Wayne Kerrigan and his replacement in the No 2 jersey, Andy Gorringe.

They now face the trip to Donegal, knowing that they will have to raise their game if they are to make it through to the last stage of the competition.
