Reserves get lifeline with win

It has been a good couple of weeks for Freddie McKelvey’s reserve side, with the previous week’s home draw followed by this convincing victory against Broomhedge Reserves.

Kris Heron gave the home keeper an early test with a shot struck from the edge of the area that was pushed away for a corner and it was Heron who scored the game’s first goal later in the half, coolly slotting home a spot kick after he was hauled down inside the Broomhedge penalty area.

A second penalty for the visitors, this time awarded for a foul on Derek Patton, enabled Scarva to double their lead.

This time the penalty taker was Noel Hamilton and he matched Heron’s earlier composure with an unerring finish from the spot.

Scarva Rangers Reserves could have forged further ahead but the home keeper made an important save when Hamilton met an Alex Hammond cross with a well struck volley.

Heron fired a shot just over the crossbar after the interval while at the other end excellent defending by Gareth Anderson snuffed out a Broomhedge attack.

The third goal Scarva Rangers Reserves’ performance had merited finally arrived when Kris Heron raced clear of the home defence and clinically chipped the ball into the net.

Alex Hammond and substitute Jeff Patton were unfortunate not to extend the margin of victory when they unleashed powerful shots that flew just wide.

This was a richly deserved win, built on team work, with a special mention for goalkeeper Alan Hammond and defenders Wayne Jordan, Gareth Anderson, Ernie Hammond and Philip Magill for ensuring a very rare clean sheet.
