Robert romps to victory in April medal at Galgorm Castle

THE April Medal at Galgorm Castle Golf Club was won by 19 handicapper Robert Graham who came home with a nett 59 for a clear six shot victory from John Fitzgerald (24) in second place.

Graham reached the turn in two over with Fitzgerald seven over. Graham’s front nine included six pars and a birdie. His back nine also included six pars as he finished 78 gross (nett 59).

Fitzgerald came home in 46 for a total of 89 gross (nett 65).

In Division 1 David Martin (10) reached the turn in 38 shots (nett 33) followed by David Stirling 36 gross (nett 34) and Adrian McCart 41 gross (nett 36).

After 12, Martin was still leading by one shot from Stirling with McCart another two shots down.

Through Beechers Martin was holding on by one shot from Stirling who was now joined by an improving McCart.

Martin, double bogey, bogey, birdie, and Stirling, birdie, bogey, par, finished together but were unable to hold off the late surge of McCart (bogey, par, birdie). Martin with a better back nine 
finished second.

At halfway in Division 2 Des Cousley (14) was two shots ahead of Derrick McClelland (15) who was two more shots ahead of James Smyth (12) and Joe Barr (13).

After 13, Cousley was still two shots ahead of McClelland who was joined by Smyth with Barr falling back another shot.

With two to play Cousley was ahead by two shots from Smyth with McClelland falling back to four shots down along with Barr who picked up a shot at 14.

A birdie, par finish from Smyth saw him join Cousley (bogey, par) and with a better back nine Smyth took first place with Cousley second. McClelland (bogey, par) and Barr (two pars) finished two shots behind.

In Division 3 Paul Reid (16) reached the turn in 39 (nett 31) followed by Geoffrey Marshall (17) 41 gross (nett 33). Gareth Marcus (18) and David McIlroy (18) were another shot down.

Marcus improved over the next four holes to move into a one shot lead from Reid and Marshall with McIlroy another shot behind.

With two to play Reid had regained the lead, one shot ahead of Marcus followed by McIlroy and Marshall at one and two shots respectively further behind.

In a very close finish Reid came home bogey, double bogey and was joined by Marcus (two bogeys) and with a better back nine Marcus finished first with Reid second. McIlroy (two bogeys) and 
Marshall (bogey, par) were one shot behind.

James McClintock (24) had a three shot advantage over William Crawford (21) and Jim Millar (21) after the front nine in a newly created Division 4.

Through 12, Crawford and Millar were two shots down on McClintock. They went three down at the next but picked up two shots on the leader at 14 to lie one 
shot behind.

Millar parred 16 and joined McClintock (bogey) in the lead with Crawford handily placed one shot behind.

McClintock finished with a nett 67 to take first place with Crawford (nett 68) and Millar (nett 68) level one shot behind and with a better back three, Crawford claimed second place.

David Stirling jnr won the best gross prize with a 68 nett.
