Roberts to run in Berlin

THE month of September bows out in style with another weekend of race action in Donegal, Tyrone, Down and Derry to tempt local athletes, although not top marathon runner, Greg Roberts, will be lining up for the prestigious Berlin Marathon this Sunday.

The annual Glenswilly 5 Kms. Road Race gets the action going tonight (Friday) at 6.45pm out of the Glemswilly GAA Clubhouse and this one, billed as the finale of the popular Donegal Athletics Board summer long race series, should attract another healthy turnout.

Tomorrow is very busy with a chioce of three race venues. Both the Bangor 10KM and the Drumragh 10KM in Tyrone have an 11am start while back in Donegal it’s 2pm for the Ards Forest Park 5KM Trail Run.

Local runners are expected to favour the latter two events and, no doubt, local clubs will be represented at both venues.

But it’s back to Foyleside this Sunday for the annual Foyle Hospice Male Run/Walk. This annual jaunt round the Banks of the Foyle has a 1.30pm start and entries can be made at the Hospice Fund-raising Centre on the Culmore Road, telephone 02871-359888.

Entry forms can be obtained at all Foyle Hospice shops in the North-West area or at any local Leisure Centre.

The event starts from the Sainsbury’s Car Park and offers two distances, five miles or two miles, to cater for different ages and varying fitness levels.

This Sunday’s Berlin Marathon will see local athlete, Greg Roberts, line-up in the elite field with a stated objective of reviving his 26.2 mile prospects.

The tough Spartan ran an excellent 2 hours and 21 minutes at the 2010 Dublin Marathon but since then has struggled to meet his own high standards in distance running. Recently he has linked up with former top local marathon men, Gerry Craig and his brother Paul, and is hopeful that he can rediscover his full potential through the streets of Berlin this Sunday.

The race will be screened ‘live’ on Eurosport on Sunday morning and may be well worth an early wake up call.
