Robinson reels in top spot

LARNE and District Angling Club travelled to Ballycastle recently for one of its planned boat competitions for the 2010 season. The sea was moderate, so competitors fished closer to the shores of Ballycastle than Rathlin.

At the start of the day the club fished for fresh bait which included mackerel, lance, and sand eel.

The competition had started with tails of dogfish being landed all around the boat. The skipper, Shaun McFaul, soon anchored the boat with the hope of some rays being landed, but only sand dabs and gurard made an appearance.

Gannon Robinson was in fine form and seemed to catch with each drop much to the envy of others. Samuel Auld landed a new club record and a rare species to the club’s boat list which was a long spinded sea scorpion – a very extroadinary looking fish and definitely not for the dinner table.

The boat moved to various locations where other species could be caught. This added to Gannon’s advantage as he kept up a fine catch rate.

This was Gannon’s day, and, sporting his new boat rod, concluded his first place trophy win.

Samuel Auld came second, with a very close third place going to Alastair Law.

The club paid compliments to skipper McFaul of the boat Lady Linda for endeavoring to help members catch as many species as possible.
