Romping to away win

Loughgall Colts 1

Lurgan Town 9

IN their second away game away from the Gordon this season, Lurgan Town U10s met Loughgall Colts at Clonmeen, Craigavon.

Town got off to an absolute flyer in this one with Ewan Buchanan netting from 10 yards out with a crisp finish within 50 seconds of the kick-off after good work down the right by Callum Ferris and Matthew Strain. What a start!

Within a few minutes Lurgan had made it 2-0, Ewan again finishing well to claim a quick-fire double that really set Town up for a good morning’s work.

Despite Lurgan enjoying the majority of the early possession and looking comfortable, Loughgall hit back with a goal of their own from close-range. Town’s defence failed to clear a corner kick from the heart of their own area, leaving Liam with no chance.

This was a timely reminder to the lads that concentration is the key in every game and that results come from committed, hard-working performances.

Town reacted brilliantly to the Loughgall goal and soon regained command of the match with another good goal from the ever-dependable Matthew Strain, closely followed by another from Callum Ferris to take the score to 4-1 in Town’s favour. Both of these strikes were the result of excellent passing from middle to front, in particular from Conor Weir at the heart of midfield.

Changes were necessary towards the end of the first half with Adam coming off injured, closely followed by Luke, who had only come on a couple of minutes beforehand. Further changes were made at halftime with Ruairi making way for Ross and Matthew withdrawn for Ryan as Callum was pushed up front.

Town continued their good work rate early in the second period and soon won a corner which led to Callum converting an excellent ball from Conor with a brilliant header in the centre of the Loughgall goal.

Ryan Irvine then poked home an excellent Simon Wilson shot which was deflected to the back post, after Ryan followed in superbly from a wide-right position.

The Lurgan line-up was constantly changed during the second half with Russell rotating the lads to different positions throughout the team to good effect. Great distribution from Liam in nets, strong tackling from Ruairi, Luke and Adam and continued good passing from Ross and co in midfield ensured a good platform for Town as they repeatedly worked the ball well, particularly down the left.

As a result, it wasn’t long before James helped himself to a goal to take the score to 7-1. Lurgan bossed the remainder of the game and James brilliantly converted another two chances to net himself a deserved hattrick, the last coming from another Town corner after a Matthew Strain pile-driver from 20 yards out was brilliantly turned round the post by the Loughall keeper.

It was a tough call for Russell to choose a star of the day after really good performances from every one of the 12 lads who played but for sheer determination and no small amount of skill it must go to James Humphreys for his excellent treble. Well done James!

Keep up the good work lads, you’re all doing really well, working hard and playing some great stuff as a squad.

The squad for the day was as follows: Liam, Simon, Ruairi, Adam, Callum, Ewan, Conor, James, Matthew, Ryan, Ross and Luke.
