Ronnie’s quickest on the Lurgan Road

This round was also the penultimate round of the Ulster Womens’ Association time trial league.

This round of the league saw four riders take part as part of the UWA League, and seven other visitors from neighbouring clubs took part as well.

It was was the second round of the Lurgan Road series sponsored by Saville Motorhomes, with the trophy sponsored by Richard Morgan. The trophy would be awarded to the rider with the fastest combined times with their time on the last round held on this course being added to the time they would get tonight.

The timekeepers got the riders underway just after 7pm with Gary Gibson setting off first, followed by Adele McCann and Gareth McCann of Apollo CT, right down to the last rider.

The Lurgan Road course is a lumpy course, know for the tough climb up Clogher Hill as well as some other tough ascents along the way.

The fastest rider on the night was Ronnie Smyth who set a very quick time of 23:36, with Gavin Magowan second in a time of 23:53. Third was awarded to John Clyde in a time of 24:59, and Marty McAnulty was fifth in a time of 25:25 due to the help of his new time trial bike.

Once the times were finalised and the rider’s handicaps added, it was Bernie Monaghan who was awarded the maximum 40 points towards the club league by beating her average time by over 2.5 miunutes.

Second went to Marty McAnulty who beat his average time by over two minutes to get 39 points towards the league. Nathan Mullan took 1.5 minutes out of his average time in what was only his second time trial, with Ted McKibben finishing over a minute ahead of his average.

Well done to all who competed, and thanks to the marshals and time keepers for their help on the night.

With the club league drawing to a close, there are still three more round to be completed.

Next Thursday night is a three-up 10 mile time trial on the Anahilt circuit, and riders are asked to pre-register so teams can be allocated. For more information see www.dromaracc.co.uk.
