Rory gives Senior Cup team a great start

THE Banbridge Senior Cup team, captained by Aidan Doran, qualified for the matchplay stages of the competition after shooting some very commendable scores at Lurgan Golf Club.

The Senior Cup was instituted in the year 1900 and it is the most coveted trophy in Irish club golf. It is the only major trophy that Banbridge have not won. They came agonisingly close a few years ago when they lost in the final to County Sligo.

Could this be their year? Who knows! At least, they have cleared the first difficult hurdle, that of qualifying.

Rory Leonard was brimming with confidence after learning that he has been included in the panel for the Irish team. He shot a brilliant 67 around Lurgan. This was one of the best scores of the day.

Young Luke Woods was not overawed at making his debut on the Senior Cup team. He shot an excellent score of 74.

Connor Doran, ever the perfectionist, was not totally happy with his round of 75 but, in the circumstances, it was just what was needed.

Jonathan Ward hung on bravely for a 78 while Alastair McCully finished with a 79.

The four best cards from Banbridge added up to 294 and that was good enough.

The four qualifying teams were Lurgan 282, Tandragee 290, Banbridge 294 and Warrenpoint 296.

The first round of the knockout stages will be played at Lurgan on Sunday, the 27th of June.

Banbridge will play Tandragee and Lurgan will play Warrenpoint. The two winners will play each other in the afternoon.

Now that is a day’s golf not to be missed.
