Route Hunt Pony Club Summer Camp

The annual summer camp of the Route Hunt Pony Club took place in Ballymoney recently.

Members arrived at the NAAA show grounds at 8am on Monday morning and presented their ponies for the veterinary inspection prior to the full week of training.

The standard of the turnout was excellent with ponies plaited and scrupulously clean and the handlers also impeccably turned out! It was a credit to the 38 members that this was maintained throughout the week despite the rather damp conditions that did not spoil the enjoyment of all the campers. Training in horse care, dressage, jumping and x-country was given by the 6 instructors to  members aged from 6 to 17 years of age and on the final day the training was put to good effect in the !one day event” competition.

Thankfully the sun shone on the Friday morning as the riders were tested in dressage and show jumping. After lunch they tackled the 17 fence x-country course that had been specially built by the “dads” under the careful direction of Fred White.

The five “fledgling” members had their own 10 fence X-country course which they all completed successfully to the delight of the parents. The Route PC would like to thank the North Antrim Agricultural Association once again for the use of the Show grounds which looked immaculate and which held up well even with the rain mid-week.

We are also indebted to the Ballymoney RP Church for the use of their Holmes Hall which provided excellent facilities for the campers.

The pony club “mums” looked after the catering and everyone was in agreement that the food was delicious and the never ending supply of tray bakes was very well received!!
