Roy wins Sandy Irwin Memorial Cup

ROY (Speedie) Robinson (14) took the honours at Rathmore Golf Club recently with a great net 63.

His front nine was not too impressive with bogeys at four and six and an ugly double bogey at eight but he returned in one over par gross to win by one shot from Michael Gaston, recent winner of the PG Stevenson Cup.

Michael had a mixture of bogeys and birdies on a front nine of 3 over gross and it was a similar story on the return leg, with birdies at ten and thirteen, to give him a net 64.

Fourteen handicapper, Jonathan Hutchinson, came in with a net 64 also, but several slip-ups, including a triple bogey at the tenth, meant his back nine score moved him into third spot.

Fourth place was occupied by Andrew McLaughlin (8) on 66. The curse of the double bogey struck Andrew at 12 but he came back in a gross three over to redeem himself.

Irish Amateur Champion, Wayne Telford continued his great form to lift the prize for best gross with a round of 68. This was a mix of six birdies and three bogeys.
