Royal Portrush Junior Golf: Easter competitions

THE Easter competitions began on the Valley Links with the Girona Cup at the end of last month.

Twelve juniors competed in this Greensomes Stableford event in which play was reduced to 9 holes because of the extremely adverse weather conditions.

The winners were Campbell Rodgers and Rory Copeland with 14 points and the runners up were Joanna and Jessica Bamber with 13 points.

Mrs Gillian Bamber also ran the Easter 9 Hole Skerries competition for boys and girls beginning golf who have no handicap or who have a high handicap. 12 beginners took part.

The winning girl was Harriet Moore with 21 points with the Claire Carson runner up on 18 points. The winning boy was Brandon Chestnutt with 26 points with Ross Moore runner up on 23 points. Mrs Bamber distributed her traditional prizes of easter eggs and other goodies and great fun was had by all.

On Friday 2nd April, another very cold and windy day the junior girls Trocadero Cup was won by Collette Mc Nicholl with 37 points with Hanna Henderson runner up with 25 points. On the same day the junior boys Harrison Cup was won by Michael Richardson with 40 points and the runner up was Campbell Rodgers with 38 points. In all 38 juniors took part.

Friday 9th April was a beautiful sunny day for the 18 hole Stableford McFaul Cup. This competition was for juniors with handicaps of 20 and above. 16 juniors participated and the winner was Evan Wall with 50 points and the runner up was Shane Walker with 43 points.

On the same day an Easter Sweep was held for the lower handicapped juniors in which a further 12 juniors participated. The winner was Matthew Bertenshaw with 40 points and the runner up was Michael Richardson with 38 points.

In the afternoon the Royal Portrush Fred Daly team had a handsome win against Clandeboye G.C. winning 6 matches out of 7 on the Dunluce course. On the return matches played at Clandeboye, Royal Portrush won 6 out of the 7 matches leaving them 12 up against 1 out of 14 and into the next round. We wish them well.
