RUGBY: Houston’s try secures victory

Larne Rugby Club’s Thirds saw off one of the league favourites in Belfast Harlequins, with a 18-13 win at Glynn on Saturday afternoon.

The home side got off to a flyer with some good pressure resulting in a well-struck penalty by M. Agnew,

Quins then came on the attack but, after J. McCluggage forced the turnover, Agnew cleared the lines and the Larne pack forced another penalty which Agnew slotted home comfortably to make it 6-0.

Quins then forced a turnover from the restart and some good attacking pressure saw them score below the posts for a converted try.

Larne’s forwards responded well, denied only by some good defensive tackling by Quins pack, who forced the turnover and sent a long clearing kick which was well gathered by Rennix. He offloaded Bergin who then went on an ambitious run from inside his own 22, only to be denied by a good covering tackle by the Quins 12,

Larne, however, used the ball quickly and the forwards showed they can also play a bit of champagne rugby when Johnston scored a terrific try under the posts, Agnew duly converted to brinf the first half to a close.

Quins hit back in the second session with two early penalties but man of the match McCluggage then took control with some hard hitting and great turnovers leading to Houston scoring in the corner to secure an 18-13 win.
