Coach not getting carried away

CITY of Derry coach Bevan Lynch believes his side struggled a little in the opening quarter on Saturday, but after that shaky start, they stepped up to the plate and empathically defeated Suttonians.

Three quick tries in the space of six minutes left their opponents shell-shocked just before the break and the home side never looked back.

"We got it tough in the first twenty minutes which did us no harm but towards the end of the first half and then in the second we opened them up.

"There were a lot of positives and the defence was a lot better than it was against Connemara. That's something that we have to address. I thought the defence was pretty good. Suttonians didn't really create a lot, they just got a couple of opportunities and they took them pretty well.

"We try to kick on. Probably the most important time is ten minutes before half time and ten minutes after half time and that's really where we buried the game. Some sides are thinking ahead to the half time break and they are not really focused the way that they should be. We deliberately target that."

The Kiwi was also thrilled by man of the match Simon Logue's display; he helped himself to four tries to help secure the victory.

"We had some exceptional finishing from Simon Logue today so with a little bit of brilliance in those time frames we got the rewards.

"We've got pace out wide and we have finishers. Last week we were guilty of going wide without actually doing the work up front but we got some great distributing from Richard Peoples and we had Richard McMaster on who looked very comfortable out there, straight out of school. It's the work we do, the quick recycle, the quick ball and we're always in business when that happens, so I was very pleased with the start."

However Lynch played down his team's excellent start to the season and he wants his player's feet to remain firmly on the ground.

"It's one game at a time. We're not going to read too much into it because we have ten points and we are at the top of the table. That doesn't mean anything. You're only as good as your next game.

"We have a good bunch of boys and they have set a high standard from themselves. Last week wasn't good enough but against Suttonians we were moving in the right direction."
