National players on trial

Wayne Kelly and Gareth Hutton from Portadown have been named on the management panel for Northern Ireland Elks' Rugby League squad.

Chambers Park played hosted recently to a trial session that finished with the Probables out on top over the Possibles by 38-10.

The Elks will face Republic of Ireland’s Eagles next month across a two-game Origin Series.

Players from hosts Portadown Pumas, Ballynahinch Rabbitohs and Belfast Met Scholars took part in the trials towards selection for Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Portadown players involved were Adam Docherty, Bodean Mane, Cameron Cromie, Conor Megarty, Jason Gribben, Mark Parker, Peter Liggett and full Ireland international John Purdy.

Robert Gacek - another Portadown player - is scheduled to meet up for the next trial session.

Key performances arrived from Ian Anderson, Gribben, Megarty, Chris Orr, Docherty, Jonny Mooney, Gary Crawford, Karl Yellop, Gareth Gill and Hugh Van Asbeck

The second fixture between Possibles and Probables has been planned to run within the next fortnight.

Kelly, Hutton and Kenny Calladine will select the 20-man Elks squad for the Origin Series.

Dates will run across the Origin Series in Galway and Portadown on, respectively August 13 and 20.

The Origin Series is scheduled to serve as preparation for Ireland’s Rugby League test with Italy during September.

International friendly dates have been planned against Malta and Jamaica before World Cup qualifiers away to Spain then home in the Republic of Ireland to Russia.

Everyone is welcome to visit Chambers Park on Saturday, July 23 - with kick-off from 2 o’clock for the next Rugby League trial session hosted by Portadown.
