Toon Ladies bounce back

Despite a disappointing end to last season when Ballymoney Ladies were forced to withdraw from the league due to a lack of players, plans are afoot to ensure the girls from the Toon bounce back bigger and better than ever.

Gill Powell, a stalwart of the Kilraught’s Road club is determined that Ladies rugby at Ballymoney will once again be a force to reckon with. Currently coaching the girls youth section, Gill is prepared to put the extra work in to make sure the Ladies’ side re-emerge this season.

“After I retired I decided to coach the young girls and ended up with a squad of 25 girls aged from 12 - 18 years old so the future is looking good and they won the Ulster Shield which is a great achievment in their first year.

“The Ladies folded midway through last season simply because we lost so many through university, pregnancy etc. and I have said I will help them get back up and running again, I was so gutted when they folded because I had worked hard for five years to get it up and keep it running. Now they are having to start at development level again. They have a new captain, Jennifer Murphy and she is very enthusiastic, we will get there again but it will take a lot of hard work.

It’s a great sport to be part of. The camaraderie is brilliant and yes its tough however, it is a contact sport so that’s to be expected. It’s about instilling the passion again, if you haven’t got the passion and motivation to play then there’s no point. Hopefully the success the Irish Ladies have had in the recent World Cup will encourage more girls into the sport.”
