Rugby: Massive win for Cookstown in opener

Playing against the breeze in the first half, a dominant Cookstown pack laid the foundations for some exciting back play which bodes well for the new season.

Converted tries by Stephen McKenna, Marty Devlin and debutant Kyle Campton as well as a drop goal from outhalf Ciaran Currie meant that victory was virtually assured at the half time whistle.

A youthful Armagh side could only respond with a penalty as Cookstown defended their line resolutely.

Cookstown continued where they left off in the second half with tries from McKenna, Devlin, Stephen Rea and Ali Jafaar.

Despite only turning up half way through the second half, Richard Brown and his fellow forwards made sure that no tries were conceded in what was a comfortable victory.

It was an encouraging performance from Cookstown particularly from man of the match Kyle Campton who marked his return to rugby with a fantastic display at No. 8.

Captain Liam Currie commented after the match: “I am happy with the result. It was a good way to kick off the league and blood new players, some of whom are new to the game of rugby”.

Training continues on Thursday evening at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena at 7pm with the next match away to Omagh on Saturday 11th October.
