Having started last season just eight appearances short of overtaking the 189 figure set by international centre, Paddy Wallace’s 189 record figure, Trimble was on track but in the sixth game of the season he suffered an injury which saw him wait almost a year to return to playing again.

When Trimble played for Ulster in their opening Guinness PRO12 game against Ospreys it saw him draw level with Wallace’s record.

But the injury jinx has hit again and he missed the game away to Scarlets and looks set to miss Friday night’s visit of Benetton Treviso to Kingspan Stadium as the PRO12 resumes again after a three-week break due to the World Cup.

Ulster head coach, Neil Doak, said there were a few players who still had to complete a “few bits and pieces” this week ahead of team selection.

“We want to give everyone as long as possible, but we are also aware there is another week’s break after this game so we do not want to silly and taking any risks.”

It is unlikely Trimble and outhalf duo, Ian Humphreys and Sam Windsor will be available for the game against the Italians on Friday night.
