Teenage kicks for Larne as U19s win Ophir Sevens

On Friday evening, in glorious sunshine at the Valley Leisure Centre, Larne and Instonians contested the Ken Bonar Memorial final. To their delight, the boys from Glynn claimed the trophy, winning by 10 points to 5. They got their hands on the silverware ahead of seven other teams, in what is proving a popular competition at the event.

On Saturday spectators enjoyed another day of sparkling rugby with teams battling it out in the league sections of the Will Totten Memorial Trophy.

The first semi-final was contested by Ophir and Ards and, despite a strong effort, the home team were well beaten by the North Down side. The second semi, between Queen’s and Dungannon, ended in a thrilling 25-point draw, with the students scoring a ‘golden try’ to book their spot in the final. They continued their excellent form in the showpiece match, defeating Ards to take home the trophy.

Ophir president, Martin Morrison said: “For once, we enjoyed perfect weather conditions for the Sevens and all the teams provided us with great entertainment. Many congratulations to Queen’s – they just about made it to the final but, in the end, were worthy winners. And not forgetting the Under-19 winners, Larne. Very well done!
