RUGBY: Webb Ellis Cup is bound for Banbridge

Although the rugby season is at a close, there is one more massive day in store for Banbridge Rugby Club.

On Friday 19th June, they will welcome the Webb-Ellis Cup to Rifle Park with everyone welcome to come and get a look at the sport’s most coveted trophy.

Played for at the Rugby World Cup, Ireland will be dreaming of getting up close with the trophy at the next tournament in England in September and October.

Local people will be able to beat them to it though at Banbridge RFC.

“Banbridge and Belfast Harlequins are the only two clubs in Ulster getting to host the trophy,” said Banbridge RFC Honorary Secretary Marc Eadie.

“Everyone is welcome to come down and take a photo with the trophy, all free of charge.

“We have the Best brothers, Rory and Simon, to thank for this as combined they have played in half the World Cups that have occurred.”

The international Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour has seen the Webb Ellis Cup showcased to audiences around the world as part of the build-up to Rugby World Cup 2015, and on 10th June the trophy will start a 100-day tour of the UK and Ireland, marking the final countdown to this year’s showcase tournament.

The trophy will be on show at Banbridge RFC’s Rifle Park from 6-8pm on Friday 19th June.

Former Ireland star and Ulster captain Simon Best will also be there.
