Running club continues to pick up speed and grows

Despite only forming in July this year, Eglinton Road Runners (ERR) are already going from strength to strength.

The club has an impressive 100 runners to date, with both a beginners group as well as a main group.

The beginners group focuses on those who are new to running and may be a bit nervous about taking it up.

The main group is for those with slightly more experience but the club strives to offer something to accommodate all levels.

A sign of the success of ERR is the uptake for the Walled City Marathon with almost 45 runners from the club signing up for the challenge in 2014.

Gareth King, who founded the group, said: “To be entirely honest I had no idea how quickly the club would grow and how popular it would become, but such was the current running boom that has engulfed the North West I knew there would never be a better time.

“I thought I’d just put the word out there and maybe half a dozen or so people would turn up, I’m amazed and delighted at the uptake, it shows the hunger out there for community running clubs like Eglinton Road Runners.

“We have a great ethos in the club, the foundation being to encourage everyone to have a go at running and offer all a platform to improve. Our experienced runners are always then on hand to help our beginners.

“The central focus of the club is of course running, but there’s a great social element to it as well, we want our members to really enjoy themselves.

“I would encourage anyone to come out with us and give it a go, no matter what your level of fitness, even if you haven’t done any running since childhood, the support for you will be there. The club prides itself on its openness and we really will strive to help you achieve whatever goals you set yourself, whether that’s to run for five minutes, a mile, to run a 5k or even to run a marathon.”

Eglinton Road Runners meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Eglinton Community Centre, Main Street, Eglinton, 5.45pm for beginners and 6.30pm for the main group. The main group also meets on Saturday mornings at 8am. There is a small charge of £1 per session on Tuesday and Thursday nights only.
