The pack contained a lot of very strong cyclists who worked effectively together; gaining speed and putting a sizeable gap between themselves and the rest of the field.

The end of the cycle however didn’t go to plan; the race marshals made a mistake and directed the lead pack the wrong way compared to the planed route. This resulted in Russell losing out on a few position going onto the 5km run leg.

Regardless of these unforeseen circumstances Russell had a strong run gaining places the whole way around the course. He crossed the line in a very respectable sixth place, only 45 seconds behind the winner, securing his place as one of the top junior tri-athletes in Britain.

The result is even more impressive as this was his fourth race in as many weekends within a very intense block of training.

This will be a very good marker for the British Championships which will be held in Wales in September where he will be aiming to improve on this result and be in contention for a podium position.
