Saint to grace Olderfleet Reds' big night

ANFIELD legend Ian St John will be the guest of honour of Liverpool fans in Larne at their annual dinner dance next month.

The Saint will attend the function organised by the Olderfleet Larne Liverpool FC Supporters' Club on Saturday, August 7 in the aptly named St John's Masonic Club at Mill Brae. Originally, the event was to have been held in the Highways Hotel, which closed last week.

An entertaining night is in prospect, as the local Reds are joined by Liverpool fans from around the Province for a chance to hear the views of the former striker and TV pundit on recent events at the club for which he played 425 times in 10 years up to 1971.

The Scottish international scored 118 goals for Liverpool, but he earned his place in the Kop's hall of fame with one in particular - the extra-time decider in the 1965 FA Cup final against Leeds. Even today, after famous nights in Rome and Istanbul, that first Wembley triumph is still cherished as one of the club's finest hours.

The Saint was a key figure in Bill Shankly's transformation of Liverpool FC from a mediocre Second Division outfit to one of the most feared sides in Europe.
