Saunders secures main honour in major weekend of club competition

Captain's Day glory arrived at Tandragee for Robert Saunders as he finished top of the 190-plus field.

Richard Hylands’ award went to Saunders thanks to runs, respectively, of 23 and 20 points.

Basil Brown posted 42 points for second spot, with James Brannigan completing the top three.

The countback left Philip Dennison over Adam Brown ahead of Colin McMullen.

Hamilton Loney collected the Past Captain’s Prize on 37 points, with Colin Calvert the Council honour and Eamon Magee winning the award for seniors.

The nearest-to-the-pin prizes went to Gary Upton and Brendan Mallon, with Stefan Greenberg registering the longest drive.

Kenny Hylands proved the pick of the captain’s guests.

In the junior section, Benjamin Boyd posted 43 points to win the Mr Captain’s Prize.

The nine-hole winner was Patrick McGrath on 18 points over Dylan Cooper’s four-hole success. William Cairns enjoyed his hole-in-one victory on the way to the nine-hole victory.

The annual Grouse Shotgun Foursomes featured Jeff Forde and Richard Hylands as the leading pairing on 66 nett. The partnership of Philip Irwin and Les Gough came home second on 66.5 nett, with William Robinson and Geoff Gray next in line.

Andy Burns and Ralph Buckley won fourth with 68 nett before Gerard Guy and Jim Campbell finished fifth.

The ladies’ section’s Myrtle Nelson Memorial was won by Anne Hall - with 39 points wrapping up Mr Captain’s Prize over Bethany Thornbury and Frances Cydesdale.

In the Senior Cup team, Stuart Paul led the squad to success by three matches to two over Mourne at Concra Wood. The afternoon session resulted in progress past Warrenpoint.

The Junior Cowdy Cup players - under James Brannigan - won three of the four matches at home to Rossmore for a lead of 13 up.

Tandragee’s Ulster Cup progress arrived over Cairndhu by 4-3, with the locals five holes up thanks to wins for Johnny Quinn, Michael Lyons and Jim Campbell.

Paul Lappin and Stefan McNeill halved scores, with Brian Fyffe and John Haffey falling short.

In the Rossmore Cup, Tandragee hit the road to face Nuremore for a second-leg meeting sitting one hole up.

Wins arrived for the pairings of Colin Holmes and Denver Jameson and Mark Upton and Colin Hyndes. Greg Bannerman and Paul Mallon lost out alongside Don Johnston and Colin Rooney.

The sudden-death play-off finished with Holmes and Jameson successful on the second-tie hole for Billy Robinson’s group.
