THE opening fixture of the thriving Darren Clarke School's League gets underway today (Tuesday) at Ballycastle Golf Club with Coleraine Inst taking on Cross & Passion while Dalriada face St Mac Nissi's Garron Tower.

The School’s League has expanded this year to include 54 participating teams.

The Belfast area has witnessed huge growth with ten teams, including BRA, St Malachy’s and Wellington College competing.

There are 11 sections in the league, teams of seven play one another in singles match-play with the winners of each section progressing to the semi-finals. The finals day will hopefully take place at Armagh Golf Club in late May.

Pupils playing in the league also receive regular coaching throughout the league season.

The league puts a huge emphasis on fundraising. Through the efforts of the schools and participants over 31,000 has already been raised for a charity very close to Darren’s heart, Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

In a further development, the league has also developed a girls’ schools competition which will take place on the 29th April at Lurgan Golf Club.

“The league is greatly indebted to the generosity of all the local clubs who have given up valuable tee time to help promote junior schools golf and the use of club facilities,” said event organiser Gerry McStay.

“Outgoing GUI President Mr P J Collins and the Ulster Branch GUI continue to provide great support as does Junior Golf Ireland and Ulster development officer Mr Gary Lavery.”
