Scrap for relegaion heats up in league

Moneydig, 2nd. Kilrea and St. Mary’s are all fighting to avoid relegation. Moneydig are bottom at present but with a game in hand over 2nd. Kilrea, positions may change.

Moneydig travelled to St. Colman’s and just got one point. In the first half Paul McCook (St. Colman’s) beat John Wallace (Moneydig) 11 shots to 5 and David Walker (St. Colman’s) finished two shots up on Trevor Workman (Moneydig).

Alan McAleese pulled a game back for the visitors with a nine shots to four shots win against John Simpson (St. Colman’s). Martin McAleese (St. Colman’s) defeated Willie Knight (Moneydig) in the final game to secure the home win.

2nd. Kilrea almost snatched a win against their old foes, the Marian, but in the end had to settle for only one and a half points. Nicky McCaw gave 2nd. Kilrea the lead when he beat James Martin (Marian) 11 shots to nine.

Joe Martin levelled the match for the home team with a one shot win against Brian McGrath (2nd. Kilrea). Brian McAlary (Marian) defeated Ivan Smyth by three shots and in the final game William McCaw (Marian) and Margaret Johnston (2nd. Kilrea) ended up nine shots apiece.

Boveedy earned six very valuable points when they entertained St. Mary’s. Alan Catherwood (Boveedy) overcame John Campbell (St. Mary’s) by 12 shots to five shots but David Gaile pulled a game back for the visitors with a single shot win against Iris Knight (Boveedy).

In the second half Doughie Morrow and Aaran Tennant both Boveedy, had wins against Declan McCann and Jordan Mullan (St. Mary’s) respectively, to seal the points.

Ballinrees entertained Dunluce this week but it was the visitors who went home the happier. It all started so well for Ballinrees when Victor Millen had a good win in his game with Uel McKeeman (Dunluce).

It was all square at the break after Barry Kane (Dunluce) beat Uel Gordon (Ballinrees) 16 shots to seven. Jonathan Calvin (Ballinrees) and Alastair Kilpatrick (Dunluce) played out a draw and it was left to Rodney Kane to give the overall win to Dunluce with an 11 shots to eight victory over William Calvin (Ballinrees).

New Row had a chance to secure top position in Division 2 but slipped up at home against fellow contenders Dunloy Presbyterian. Wesley Caldwell (Dunloy) was too strong for John Graham (New Row), winning by seven shots.

Mark Callaghan got a game back for New Row when he sneaked a one shot win over Joe Campbell (Dunloy). With two convincing wins in the second half from Stephen Dunlop and Mark Shaw (both Dunloy) who beat Jonathan Elder and Sammy McArthur (New Row) respectively, it’s Dunloy who now sit top of Division 2.

Having lost their last two games, Garvagh and District had a welcome win over Castlerock. Victor Callaghan made good start for Castlerock as he beat Elizabeth McCafferty (Garvagh) 11 shots to four.

David Workman then put the home team on the score sheet with a five shots victory against Ronnie Steele (Castlerock). Jackie Hutchinson put Castlerock in front once again when he beat Ken McLenaghan 11 shots to eight. However a big win for Geoffrey Boyce who played Brian Wilson (Castlerock) gave Garvagh and District the bonus points.

Drumreagh played 1st Coleraine and had an easy win, picking up six points in the process. Clifford McLernon put 1st. Coleraine into the lead with a three shots win over Raymond Clyde (Drumreagh).

Brian Taggart (Drumreagh) then beat Bryan Shaw (1st. Coleraine) to level the match. Both Alastair Walker and Edwin Jackson (Drumreagh) had wins in the second half against Jim Campbell and Colin Hutchinson (1st. Coleraine) to give the home team the overall score.
